DESCRIPTION:Join Historic Nashville for a members-only tour of the Tennessee Supreme Court Building on Saturday\, September 24th\, 2016 at 10:00 am. \nMeet at:\nTennessee Supreme Court Building\n401 7th Ave N\nNashville\, TN 37219 Map \nJoin us for a tour of the historic Tennessee Supreme Court Building which was listed on the National Register of Historic Places in 2014. \nThe four-story building was built in 1937 by Rock City Construction Company and was designed by Nashville architects Marr & Holman in a style known as Stripped Classicism. Currently\, the Tennessee Supreme Court offices are housed in this building\, and the court meets here when it is in session in Nashville. Parts of three films were shot in the court building: “Marie” in 1984 starring Sissy Spacek\, “Last Dance” in 1995 starring Sharon Stone\, and “Billy: The Early Years” in 2008. A representative will lead us on the tour which will last approximately an hour. \nNote: there is no designated parking for this tour. Please utilize parking on any adjoining streets and garages. Craighead was the son of early Nashville settler the Rev. Thomas Craighead. In 1823\, Craighead married Lavinia Robertson Beck\, youngest daughter of Nashville founders Charlotte and James Robertson. Major additions to the house were made in 1824\, 1919\, and 1998. Ample parking is available at or near the house. \nBrentwood Hall\, built circa 1910\, was the estate of prominent Nashville businessman and banker Rogers Caldwell who was often called “the J.P. Morgan of the South”. Caldwell was the son of another prominent Nashville son\, James Caldwell\, and grew up at the historic Longview mansion in Oak Hill. After the stock market crash of 1929\, Rogers Caldwell’s company went bankrupt\, leading to the scandalous failure of nearly 100 banks across the South in what was called “greatest financial disaster which Tennessee has ever experienced”. The state of Tennessee seized Caldwell’s estate in the aftermath. The property now operates under the Tennessee Department of Agriculture. The grounds include Caldwell’s former mansion\, a renovated horse barn which now houses an agriculture and early Tennessee history museum\, a family cemetery\, 1800’s-era log cabins\, an arboretum and various state agency office buildings. Members should meet in the lobby of 1305 Clinton Street to begin the tour at the Car Museum. \nOnce abandoned and overgrown with weeds\, Marathon Village is now a booming national tourist destination and home of the original Marathon Motor Car factory. The factory and surrounding buildings were built between circa 1881 and 1912 with differing styles of architecture. Several original Marathon Cars can be viewed inside the car museum. The village is an example of adaptive reuse of historic Nashville structures and houses various local businesses including an art gallery\, a coffee shop\, boutiques\, a brewery and taproom\, and the popular Antique Archaeology store.
