SUMMARY:Behind-the-Scenes Tour of the Castner-Knott Building
DESCRIPTION:Join us for a tour of the historic Castner-Knott Department Store building in Downtown Nashville.\nThe experience of going downtown for shopping is a beloved memory for many Nashvillians.  Castner-Knott was one of the “big three” department stores of Nashville and a popular shopping destination for decades.  As one of the pioneers of the department store concept in Nashville\, Castner-Knott Dry Goods Company opened in 1898 on 5th Avenue.  In 1906 it moved to a new building built on the corner of Church and Capitol Boulevard.  The success and longevity of the business is also of great interest.  The building itself is iconic and is now on the national register of historic places.  Our tour will cover all the floors of this former dept. store\, which closed in 1996 and is now commercially leased. \nAn optional second tour will be offered to another historical building a short walk away that is more than 100 years old and an important historical site is also located nearby. \nTour will be hosted by Mike Shmerling and light food and beverage will be available after the tours (Coffee\, tea\, hot chocolate\, muffins and bagels). \nNote:  there is no designated parking for this tour.  Please utilize parking on any adjoining streets and garages.  Members should meet at the corner near Morton’s Steakhouse. \nHope to see you there! \nPlease use the Eventbrite ticket form below. The state of Tennessee seized Caldwell’s estate in the aftermath. The property now operates under the Tennessee Department of Agriculture. The grounds include Caldwell’s former mansion\, a renovated horse barn which now houses an agriculture and early Tennessee history museum\, a family cemetery\, 1800’s-era log cabins\, an arboretum and various state agency office buildings. Join Historic Nashville members for a behind-the-scenes exclusive tour of the estate of one of Nashville’s most prominent and infamous residents at the turn of the century. \nTour will include Brentwood Hall\, the old cemetery\, and the agriculture museum.
